Over the years, I’ve had hundreds of people ask about my dad’s journey. Whether it’s someone walking through a diagnosis or a caregiver searching for answers, the questions are always heartfelt—and familiar:
What did you do? What helped him? How is he still here?
I’ve told this story so many times, always wishing I had it all written down. So now I am—starting here.
In May 2005, my dad was diagnosed with both non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as well as non-small cell adenocarcinoma in his lungs.
That same year, he underwent a double lobectomy, removing two-thirds of his right lung.
In addition, they removed visible tumors from his neck, under his arm, and never addressed spots on his groin and spleen—both of which have never shown up again on another PET scan. That in itself felt like a miracle.
After surgery and recovery, he went into remission for 7 years.
But in May 2012, we received devastating news... that cancer had returned.
Nodules that had been monitored for over a year had grown and spread to all three remaining lung lobes. The official diagnosis was stage 4 lung cancer.
On June 14, 2012, after my dad underwent emergency surgery, I remember sitting in the hospital parking lot, crying and asking for prayers on Facebook.
That very day, an old friend reached out and shared research with me—specifically about Boswellia. That message was the start of something new.
Here's the 3 scientific studies that were sent to me that featured research co-authored by scientist H.K. Lin:
- Boswellia sacra Essential Oil Induces Tumor Cell-Specific Apoptosis in Human Breast Cancer Cells
- Frankincense Oil Derived from Boswellia carteri Induces Tumor Cell Specific Cytotoxicity
- Frankincense Essential Oil from Boswellia sacra Induces Human Pancreatic Cancer Cell Death
That information was enough for me and 30 days later, I purchased a starter kit (similar to this one), and we began using essential oils daily as a part of our wellness regimen.
On August 6, my dad began conventional treatment: eight weeks of intense chemotherapy and radiation.
He endured:
- Daily radiation, five days a week
- 8-hour chemo drips, five days a week
- Including powerful drugs known as the Red Devil and Bone Crusher
By October, the doctors told us his body wasn’t responding they way they had hoped and there was nothing more they could do.
And they released him from treatment.
It was during that time I did what any daughter would do when her back is against the wall:
I went all in.
With prayer.
With research.
With faith.
With prayer.
With research.
With faith.
And with everything I could find to support my dad’s body in the most natural, loving way possible. With every follow up appointment and scan, the doctors would say, "Whatever you are doing Mr. Cox, keep doing it." as they could see visible shrinkage of the nodules and tumors.
In April 2014, 18 months after treatment ended, my dad was declared cancer-free!
And now—11 years later—he’s still here. Still present. Still a miracle.
I’m writing an ebook called The Conscious Caregiver to tell the full story. It's not medical advice or a prescription. It’s a deeply personal testimony of what I’ve learned as a daughter, caregiver, and advocate—about natural living, faith, grief, hope, and healing.
